Graphic Design
 Course Publication
Publication
This publication is inspired by the ongoing cycle of work produced at Kingston Graphic Design. We often feel like we are bouncing between projects and continually organizing chaos. This led to the recognition that Kingston’s studio culture is characterized by an abundance of processes, visible everywhere. Rather than hide these processes and present a publication with only finished outcomes, we wanted to celebrate the act of making itself and the discoveries that come from it.

Created for the graphic design course at Kingston School of Art.

from Concept to
Creation
This publication serves as a tangible reflection of the creative journey within Kingston Graphic Design, encapsulating the unique studio culture that thrives on the constant interplay of ideas, experimentation, and process. Inspired by François Jullien’s concept of *interspace*—a space of potential and creativity that emerges from the tension between different cultures and philosophies—this project seeks to explore how design can be more than just a response to content. Instead, it examines how form, context, and audience can actively reshape that content.

Jullien’s philosophical approach emphasizes the ‘écarts’, or divergences, between Chinese and European thought, challenging the exceptionalism often found in Western ideas. In the same vein, this publication does not merely showcase finished designs but celebrates the act of making itself, highlighting the iterative process of creation that characterizes our studio environment.

Designed as a 48-page printed publication, this work is a collaboration between Finley and me, with contributions from the institution featured in four central pages. It is intended to communicate the essence of the course to prospective students, offering a glimpse into the dynamic, process-oriented approach that defines Kingston Graphic Design. The publication is not just a product but a process, one that invites readers to engage with the complexities and possibilities of design as an ongoing, ever-evolving practice.

By focusing on both the material outcomes and the intangible relationships that design fosters, this project aims to expand the definition of publishing beyond traditional forms, embracing digital and immaterial mediums as well. It is an official publication that will be handed out to students and newcomers at the university, representing the course and its ethos for years to come.
